Meet Wayne - From Senior Night Carer to Home Manager

Why I Chose the Care Sector

My journey into the care sector began with a deeply personal connection. Both of my younger brothers have learning disabilities, and growing up alongside them gave me a strong sense of compassion, patience, and understanding from an early age. It was this lived experience that inspired me to take my first role in a supported living care home for adults with learning disabilities.

From the moment I started, I knew I had found something truly meaningful. I developed a real passion for enriching the lives of others, championing their independence, and being a voice for those who couldn’t always advocate for themselves. Supporting individuals in living fulfilling, empowered lives was not just a job, it became a purpose.

As my passion for care grew, so did my desire to broaden my knowledge and experience. That’s what led me to make the transition into elderly care, where I continue to build on those same values, providing dignified, person-centred care, and making a difference in people’s lives every single day.

What I’m Proud Of

That’s a tough question; there are so many moments I’m proud of. But as a manager, what stands out most is having the privilege of leading such a dedicated, hardworking team who go above and beyond every day to deliver truly person-centred care.

I’ll never forget the love and support I received from the team at Cowbridge, my first home as a manager. It was incredibly hard to move on from such a close-knit team and incredible residents, but I knew there were other residents and another team who needed me, and I was ready to bring my experience to them.

More recently, I’ve had the honour of mentoring a Senior Carer at Rivermead View, supporting them as they step into a Care Supervisor role. Watching them grow and succeed is incredibly rewarding. I hope they’ll go on to become an inspiring manager within Cornwallis, just like I had the chance to do.

Meet Amy - From Healthcare Assistant to Quality Assurance Advocate

My journey with Cornwallis Care Services began in 2006 at Trecarrel Care Home, where I started as a Health Care Assistant. With the support of Cornwallis, I completed my Level 2 in Health and Social Care, and over time, I took on various roles from working in the kitchen to becoming a Senior Team Leader after achieving my Level 3 qualification and completing medication administration training.

I later moved to Beech Lodge, where I worked in 1-to-1 support, before rejoining the senior team. I stayed there for 12 wonderful years before being offered an exciting new challenge to joining the Quality Assurance Team.

Proud Moments

“One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to act as an advocate for residents and their families, especially when they’re unable to express themselves fully.

Whether it’s through palliative care or helping someone adjust to a life they didn’t expect, it’s an honour to share in their journey and make even the hardest transitions a little easier. Being their voice and earning that trust is a privilege.

Amy’s Advice for Working in Care

Where you work might be your job, but to our residents it’s their home. Be respectful. Be kind. And above all, listen to their stories, they are full of wisdom, humour, and heart.

You’ll be amazed at what you’ll learn.

Meet Kiah - From Care Assistant to Manager in Just 5 Years!

I’ve been with Cornwallis Care Services since 2020. I started as a Health Care Assistant at Hendra Court, later becoming a Team Leader. I then moved to Trecarrel, where I progressed to a Senior role and was supported by Cornwallis to complete my Level 3 in Adult Care.

In 2023, I became Deputy Manager, and by January 2025, I took on my first Manager role covering maternity leave at Beech Lodge. Most recently, in June 2025, I was offered the permanent Manager position at Cowbridge, where I’ll soon be officially registered. I’m also grateful to be starting my Level 5 Management qualification with the full support of Cornwallis.

What I’m Proud Of

I can’t pinpoint one huge achievement—it’s the small things that matter most. Dressing up as the Easter Bunny, organising fundraisers, going the extra mile just because I want to. I’m proud of how far I’ve come in just five years.

In care, you see things you can’t unsee and hear stories that stay with you—but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Kiah’s Advice for Future Carers

There will be good days and bad days, don’t let the bad ones define you. Learn from them, adapt, and keep going. Care work is not for the faint-hearted. It’s demanding, but it’s also about innovation, compassion, and giving back to a generation who gave us so much.
